Champions League Quarter-Finals: Real Madrid and Lyon Secure First-Leg Wins

In the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final first legs, Real Madrid claimed a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium. Goals from Linda Caicedo and Athenea del Castillo capitalized on defensive errors by Arsenal, who struggled to adapt to the muddy pitch conditions following heavy rain. The poor state of the field drew criticism from former England international Ian Wright, especially after Real Madrid’s Melanie Leupolz sustained a knee injury during the match.

Meanwhile, Olympique Lyonnais defeated Bayern Munich 2-0, demonstrating their physical prowess and tactical superiority. Lyon dominated the match with 19 shots, 10 on target, while Bayern managed only one shot on target. Goals from Tabitha Chawinga and Lindsey Heaps, coupled with defensive errors from Bayern, have put Lyon in a strong position ahead of the second leg.

Upcoming Clash: Manchester City vs. Chelsea

Manchester City is set to host Chelsea at the Academy Stadium in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League quarter-final. This encounter comes just days after Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over City in the League Cup final. Under new manager Sonia Bompastor, Chelsea remains unbeaten and leads the Women’s Super League by eight points. City, managed by interim coach Nick Cushing, aims to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in seven years.
